I have described myself as an "electron microscopist" for most of my professional life despite not being very good at it. I have certainly won grants to do microscopy, bought microscopes, written several books about it, helped many students interpret their micrographs and presented our work at many international conferences. However I have never actually been particularly expert at the core business of taking pictures! Luckily I have had some excellent students and co-workers who were, and still are, marvellous practitioners of the subtle art of adjusting an EM to take great images. Thanks to all of you - you know who you are.
As a tribute to high resolution microscopists everywhere, you have probably noticed that the background to my whole web site is an HRTEM image at lattice-column resolution. Needless to say, I did not take it myself.
